  2. Playfair Cipher Introduction § The Playfair cipher was the first practical digraph substitution cipher. The scheme was invented in 1854 by Charles Wheatstone, but was named after Lord Playfair who promoted the use of the cipher. The technique encrypts pairs of letters (digraphs), instead of single letters as in the simple substitution cipher.

Pigpen Cipher is a geometrical monoalphabetic substitution cipher. In other words, rather than using letters of the alphabet, you form words from geometric symbols. The cipher has been in use since the 1500s, and is also know by the names Masonic Cipher, Napoleonic Cipher, Tic-Tac-Toe Cipher, Pig Pen and Freemason’s Cipher.
